MEMS-Based Muscle Interfaces for Insect Cyborg Control
نویسندگان
چکیده
We, for the first time, demonstrated a reliable hybrid tissue-electronics interface in insects, by using silicon probes and inserting them at an early pupae stage so that the tissue grows around the probes for a highly natural implant in the insect. This work paves the way for future engineering approaches to utilize the bioelectronic interfaces and to create insect cyborgs. A successful emergence yield rate of 90% was obtained with the implanted systems. Preliminary flight control results indicate left and right wing control of Manduca sexta and full-flight control is under investigation.

For decades, scientists and engineers have been fascinated by cybernetic organisms, or cyborgs, that fuse artificial and natural systems. Cyborgs enable harnessing biological systems that have been honed by evolutionary forces over millennia to achieve astounding feats. Male moths can detect a single pheromone molecule, a sensitivity of roughly 10 grams. Thus, cyborgs can perform tasks at scale...

Our aim with Beauty Technology is to transform our body in an interactive platform by hiding technology into beauty products for creating muscle based interfaces that don’t give the wearer a cyborg look. FX e-makeup is a Beauty Technology prototype that applies FX makeup materials embedded with electronics for sensing the face’s muscles. This work presents Winkymote and Kinisi as proof of conce...
متن کاملOral Dosing of Chemical Indicators for In Vivo Monitoring of Ca2+ Dynamics in Insect Muscle
This paper proposes a remarkably facile staining protocol to visually investigate dynamic physiological events in insect tissues. We attempted to monitor Ca2+ dynamics during contraction of electrically stimulated living muscle. Advances in circuit miniaturization and insect neuromuscular physiology have enabled the hybridization of living insects and man-made electronic components, such as mic...
